Ghosts and Astronauts is a live performance experiment occurring simultaneously between
Riverside Studios and The Place theatre by basic internet video-conference technology.
CUSeeMe internet shareware and projectors are used to transport the moving bodies of the performance from one place to the other. Instead of simply adding prepared choreography to a technological context, the choreographic and interactive vocabulary between the dancers is generated through live experimentation with the link. The CUSeeMe connection introduces its own grainy and delayed aesthetic, enhancing the play between presence, absence, the material and the immaterial that makes this technology such a rich resource for dance experimentation.
The Ghosts theme emerges easily from the physical/technological environment and the fact that the date of the performance is Halloween. The theme of Astronauts is relevant
since space travel pushes at the limits of our definition of the material body. Parts of the
choreographic material were inspired by french choreographer Kitsou Duboi's
research with astronauts in microgravity.
Audience members are invited to view the work at either Riverside Studios (Box Office: 0181 741 2255) or The Place Theatre (Box Office: 0171 387 0031) at 8pm, October 31st. Tickets are available for free but advanced reservations are required.
