The Finale - A Life Forms Competition

So you have seen the Life Forms program, wandered through examples of how it can be used. Now show us your talents. We want you to create a short movement sequence [no more than1.44Mb] to fit the festive theme of "New Year Revolutions". New Scientist and Illuminations will bring together an experienced panel to judge the competition including Mark Baldwin, resident choreographer of the Scottish Ballet, and one of Britain's leading contemporary dance makers. Winning entrants will receive a bumper pack of goodies from Macromedia, including the companies latest tool for 3D design and animation - Extreme 3D, due for release early in 1996.

Those of you with access to Macintosh computers can download a cut-down edition of the Life Forms software - see the Life Forms page for details. As the PC version of the software is still in an early phase of testing we suggest that the many PC users create their compositions in any animation or video package you feel comfortable with. All competition entries should be supplied as Quicktime movies, PICS animation files, or even as sample GIFs and uploaded onto our server via ftp. If you do not have ftp facilities you can put your work on a floppy disk (one disk only please) and send it to:

New Year Revolutions competition,

All competition entries should arrive by 30 January 1996. Judging of entries will take place in early February and the winners will be announced on this Website on 14 February 1995. All winners will also be notified by email.

The competition is open to all age groups and abilities. For judging purposes, however, we will split the contest into three categories: one for those with experience of dance making, one for those with no background in dance and one for persons under the age of 15. Please enclose details of age range (under 15/ over 15) with your entry as well as brief details of any experience in dance making.

All entries to the competition become the property of Illuminations and New Scientist, the sponsors and will not be returned. The sponsors, the artists and the judges are not responsible for late, lost, illegible, damaged, incomplete, stolen or misdirected entries. The decision of the panel of jusdges is final and the sponsors retain the right to display suitable entries on their Web pages.

The contest is not open to employees and immediate family members of the sponsors or the judges.
