Visit to Ely Cathedral: Tuesday 6th January 2009

Cathedral website - http://www.cathedral.ely.anglican.org

Ely Cathedral contacts: Jan Munt, Head of Education, and Carole Campbell, Cathedral Administrator

On Tuesday the 6th 2009, via an introduction by Saul Penfold, Terry met with Jan Munt and Carole Campbell, presenting a detailed proposal for how Ely Cathedral could host No Shelter from the Storm. Following this, both Jan and Carole were happy to give Ely Cathedral's "in principle" approval for hosting No Shelter from the Storm.

Next steps: We need to further develop the education strand and finalise dates and final position for the projectors and video projections, etc. but Ely is officially on board in terms of being listed in the next stage funding proposal.

Terry and Gabi are also writing a FAQs document to email to each interested cathedral

This video is a first mock-up of how some of the imagery could look in the crossing of Ely Cathedral. As you can see comparing this mock-up with that of Worcester Cathedral, Terry has needed to modify his images in response to the very different shapes of the pillars supporting the octogon at the Ely Cathedral crossing. NB this is not a definitive design – it is simply an indication of how the projections might work in Ely Cathedral. This is the first of several mock-ups that Terry will produce in order to explore the visual possibilities. It was produced after his visit to Ely Cathedral on the 6th of Janurary. As we explore this project further, we intend to create similar visualisations for all the cathedrals that will host No Shelter From the Storm.

So far, in all the cathedrals visited and considered, the cathedral crossing seems to offer the best combination of good, wide projection surfaces and public visibility. So Terry is seriously considering the crossing as the projections location - but is not yet sure whether the projections would work best on the East or West Pillars. This animation of a proposed space for projection is on the East Pillars.

The additional images show just a few examples of the beauty of Ely Cathedral.
