Visit to Southwark Cathedral: Monday 26th January 2009

Southwark Cathedral contact: Rose Harding, Business Development Manager

Terry met with Rose Harding, the Business Development Manager at Southwark Cathedral on the 26th of January 2009. Terry explained the background to the project and, in a departure from previous cathedral meetings, considered the possibility of two installations at Southwark Cathedral:
1. An interior installation, most probably located at the east side of the crossing using two High Definition projectors
and
2. A second installation, outside the cathedral, projecting on to the spire. Thousands of commuters crossing London Bridge and driving down and Borough High Street, as well as those traveling to and from work on Network Rail lines, have a clear view of the spire of Southwark Cathedral every working day.

The video above is a first mock-up of how some of the imagery could look in the crossing of Southwark Cathedral. NB this is not a definitive design – it is simply an indication of how the projections might work in Southwark Cathedral. This is the first of several mock-ups that Terry will produce in order to explore the visual possibilities. It was produced after his visit to Southwark Cathedral on the 26th of Janurary. As we explore this project further, we intend to create similar visualisations for all the cathedrals that will host No Shelter From the Storm.

NB Although Terry is very interested in creating the projection onto the spire of Southwark Cathedral, it must be said that there are technical and security issues that will need to be resolved in order to do so

The additional images below show just a few examples of the beauty of Southwark Cathedral.
