Visit to Worcester Cathedral: Monday 5th January 2009

Cathedral website - http://www.worcestercathedral.co.uk

Worcester Cathedral contacts: Sue Adeney, Education Officer, and Susan Macleod, Operations Manager

On Monday the 5th of January 2009, via an introduction by Saul Penfold, Terry met with Sue Adeney and Susan MacLeod. Terry explained the project in more detail (Sue had previously visited the website) and talked about his artistic intentions and also showed the video mock-up of Norwich Cathedral and stills that he had taken of Worcester Cathedral earlier that day. Currently, Terry is again considering of the crossing - but this time perhaps on the East Crossing.

Next steps: We need to further develop the education strand and finalise dates and final position for the projectors and video projections, etc. but Ely is officially on board in terms of being listed in the next stage funding proposal.

Terry and Gabi are also writing a FAQs document to email to each interested cathedral

The video above is a first mock-up of how some of the imagery could look in the crossing of Worcester Cathedral. NB this is not a definitive design – it is simply an indication of how the projections might work in Worcester Cathedral. This is the first of several mock-ups that Terry will produce in order to explore the visual possibilities. It was produced after his visit to Worcester Cathedral on the 6th of Janurary. As we explore this project further, we intend to create similar visualisations for all the cathedrals that will host No Shelter From the Storm.

So far, in all the cathedrals visited and considered, the cathedral crossing seems to offer the best combination of good, wide projection surfaces and public visibility. So Terry is seriously considering the crossing as the projections location - but is not yet sure whether the projections would work best on the East or West Pillars. This animation of a proposed space for projection is on the East Pillars.

The additional images show just a few examples of the beauty of Worcester Cathedral.
