JavaDance - 2000-2001

JavaDance is a unique experiment in using computer technology as an aid to both artistic and scientific enquiry, to animate stone carvings of dancers from a temple complex in Central Java. The animation will be based on rigorous archeological research on the dance and temple rituals of Java. However, the dance form frozen in these beautiful temple sculptures no longer exists as a living art.
Mapping, drawing and photographing the temples can only take us so far in the quest to understand the important role of dance in 9th century Javanese temple life. JavaDance will take the next step by using computer animation to bring the life back into this extinct dance form.
JavaDance will stretch over at least a year, involving; treks to remote temple sites in Java, where we will be pioneering non-invasive methods of producing accurate 3D models. The finished CD-Rom and Web site will enable those interested in archeology and/or dance, to explore this complex and important culture in a unique way.
